Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
