As confusing as it is to witness the president seek toι’ θ¦ the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves β among senior generations a near majority β who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably definitely not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the poor β and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to present the other cheek β not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his crime policy states that when someone steals your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The obvious and clear reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening β The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Highest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in numbers during minor elections.
