A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
